Data-Driven Marketing for Marketers with No Budget or Skills
Are you just getting started as a marketer and feeling overwhelmed trying to wrap your head around data-driven strategies?
It can be intimidating when you don't have the skills - or resources - needed to go all-in when making data-centric decisions. The good news is that even with limited skills and resources, you can still implement some tactics today to get started on the right foot.
I'm here to walk through six key areas where marketers without data science expertise can leverage analytics and insights.
Utilize Free Resources
Take advantage of free online resources like tutorials and webinars to learn about data-driven marketing.
Many of these resources are tailored towards beginners, so you can get up to speed quickly. Plus, you don’t need any special equipment or software to access the content – it's all available online.
There are many free online resources out there to help you. From webinars to tutorials, the world of data-driven marketing is at your fingertips. Don't let lack of knowledge hold you back. Take advantage of the free resources available and become a data-driven marketing master quickly. After all, who doesn't love free stuff?
Here are some examples of where you can find great free resources.
YouTube: YouTube is a great resource for beginner and advanced videos to get you up to speed on data-driven marketing.
Blogs: There are many blogs from experts in the field that offer tips, tricks, tutorials, and more. Not only use Google search, go to newsletter directories, and see if there are any blogs with great newsletters.
Webinars are a great way to get up-to-date information on data-driven marketing strategies. There are so many webinars out there, so I usually search the marketing or marketing technology company's website and see if any webinars are coming up. Sometimes, companies offer access to historical webinars as well.
Document Your Processes & Strategies
Documenting your processes and strategies helps to ensure that data-driven decisions are consistent across your organization. This can also enable you to assess the impact and effectiveness of your campaigns over time.
To start, brainstorm all the steps in your marketing processes – from campaign planning to launch. Then, document how each step contributes to the overall success of those strategies. You can create a flowchart or diagram for easy reference during team meetings or strategy reviews.
At the agency manager, we document best practices and rewrite our playbooks in Notion. Documentation by itself seems like we're hoarding information, so it is also important to share the learnings with your team. Proving an output and getting feedback from the stakeholders helps to ensure that everyone is on the same page and can make data-driven decisions.
Set Goals
Identify specific goals you want to accomplish with your data-driven marketing efforts.
Let's dive into the importance of setting goals. We all understand the power of data-driven marketing, but having a clear vision of what you want to achieve is equally crucial.
So, ask yourself: What specific goals do you have in mind?
Are you aiming to increase website traffic or improve conversion rates? Defining your goals from the beginning is essential, as they will shape your strategies and help you focus on what truly matters.
Remember, setting goals is like steering a ship through turbulent waters - it may not always be smooth sailing, but with a clear destination in mind, you will ultimately reach your desired outcome.
I like the concept of ready, aim, fire, and debrief. A lot of marketers follow the process of “Fire -> Aim.” Instead of “Ready -> Aim -> Fire -> Debrief”. So, to improve your business performance, you must know what you’re measuring for by preparing and planning.
Analyze Your Existing Data
Compile and analyze data from your current customer database or website traffic stats to help identify trends and target customers more effectively.
It amazes me how many marketers aren't grounded in data despite almost all businesses installing Google Analytics on their websites.
Gain valuable insights and uncover trends about your target customers by analyzing your existing data. Don't have a robust customer database? No problem! Begin by examining your website traffic data through Google Analytics.
Numerous free tools are available to track and analyze this data. So, why wait?
Develop an Experimentation Plan
Create a plan for experimenting with different strategies or tactics to see what works best for your campaigns.
To find the most effective strategy for your marketing efforts, it's important to try out different approaches. Think of it as a lab scientist, testing various methods until we discover the winning formula. So, where do we begin?
The first step is to understand our audience and what they prefer. Once we have that information, we can brainstorm ideas and implement our experiments. Remember, it's okay to make mistakes along the way. Just keep track of your progress and take notes so you can make informed decisions for future campaigns.
My advice is to start with a good hypothesis and test it out. This will help you avoid wasting time or resources on strategies that don't work. We learned this in our science class in high school, right?
